Darius Slayton's NFL career at risk after Colts make quick decision to let him go

Darius Slayton Released by Colts

Darius Slayton’s brief stint with the Indianapolis Colts has officially come to an end.

The Colts announced on Friday that they have released the veteran wide receiver, who was brought in at the end of September to help the team cope with Alec Pierce’s placement on injured reserve due to a heel issue.

The team had hoped Slayton’s previous experience with quarterback Daniel Jones during their time with the Giants would provide a valuable deep threat in the absence of Pierce.

Unfortunately, during his short time as a Colt, Slayton didn’t get the chance to take the field.

At 29, Slayton had spent seven seasons with the Giants after being drafted in the fifth round in 2019. Over his career, he averaged 15.0 yards per catch from 296 receptions, totaling 4,435 yards.

He led the Giants in receiving yards in both 2022 and 2023, but his performance had declined over time, despite Malik Nabers missing a significant part of the 2025 season.

Last season, Slayton was somewhat limited due to double sports hernias, which he underwent surgery for on April 30.

His time with the Giants ended with his release on September 7, after which he expressed gratitude on social media, saying, “Grateful for my time in NY. 7 years a Giant nothing but love for one of the most prestigious organizations in the NFL. Excited to see what’s next.”

Recently, Slayton suffered a knee injury during practice, which kept him out of the Colts’ lineup in Week 5.

Head coach Shane Steichen mentioned that Slayton’s injury was “getting better.”

This season, the Colts have faced challenges in their receiving corps. In addition to Pierce’s absence, Ashton Dulin has been battling a hamstring injury, and Keenan Allen was unable to play in their Week 4 match against the Commanders in London.
