Darin Graham Nordone Sworn in as U.S. Senator Pro Tempore
Darin Graham Nordone has officially taken the oath as a U.S. senator pro tempore, stepping in to complete the term of his late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina).
This term will last until the conclusion of the 119th Congress on January 3, 2027.
As Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) instructed him, “Raise your right hand.” He went on to affirm the duties associated with the office, asking if Nordone would commit to defending the Constitution of the United States. To this, Graham Nordone simply replied, “I think so.”
His appointment came from Gov. Henry McMaster (R-S.C.) following the passing of his brother at the age of 71 after what was described as a “brief and sudden illness.”
“Lindsey cared for her sister for many years after she passed away,” McMaster shared. “I am honored to ask his sister Darin Graham to continue his work now.”
Interestingly, President Donald Trump had hinted at this development in a post on Truth Social, suggesting it would be a fitting tribute to Lindsey.
Several prominent Republicans, including Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.C.), expressed support for Graham Nordone, stating he would carry on his brother’s seat, legacy, and efforts for South Carolina.
Mace remarked, “Darling Graham has been sworn in as the next U.S. senator from South Carolina, filling the seat held for 23 years by Lindsey Graham. Lindsey adopted her as his own daughter after her parents passed away. Today, she carries forward his seat, legacy, and fight for the state of South Carolina.”
Thune also welcomed Graham Nordone, expressing his confidence that she would continue the dedicated service that Lindsey provided to South Carolina.
Senator Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska) noted it was a privilege to witness the swearing-in, emphasizing that Graham Nordone would honorably carry on her brother’s legacy in the Senate.
