In a recent poll released by a conservative-leaning firm, South Carolina Senator Darline Graham found herself narrowly ahead of her Democratic challenger, Annie Andrews. The poll indicated that Graham received 43.4% support compared to Andrews’ 42.3%, according to data from The Trafalgar Group, based in Atlanta. Notably, the respondents included 59% registered Republicans and 29% Democrats.
Between Wednesday and Friday, the poll surveyed 1,087 likely voters and carried a margin of error of 2.9%. Previously, an InsiderAdvantage poll from September 10 showed Graham with a slight advantage of two points, while another survey by Impact Research from mid-August had them in a tie at 41%. As of Monday, RealClearPolling placed Graham ahead by 2.6 points.
Support for Graham appears to be stronger among older voters, with 50.9% of those aged 50 to 64 and 50.5% of those 65 and older backing her. Conversely, Andrews attracted a greater share of the younger demographic, securing 59.7% of voters aged 18 to 29 and 52.4% of those ages 30 to 39.
Graham emerged victorious in the Republican primary runoff on August 25, thanks in part to an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. She was appointed by Republican Governor Henry McMaster to fill the seat of her late brother, former Senator Lindsey Graham, who died on July 11.
During a debate on August 19, Graham faced criticism when asked about national security concerns related to Taiwan and the South China Sea. “I’m just going to be honest here. I’m not that informed on national security,” she responded, emphasizing her support for the military.
Some local Republicans expressed surprise over Graham’s candidacy. Jordan Pace, Chairman of the South Carolina Freedom Conference, noted that the party did not endorse her for a full term, while State Representative Jay Kilmartin indicated that there is frustration among grassroots Republicans regarding her policies.
Graham’s brother, Lindsey, was known for his pro-war stance and past controversial remarks, including calls for aggressive action against various international figures and conflicts. As elections approach, there have been indications of shifting dynamics, with 15 significant House races trending toward Democratic candidates just weeks before the polls open.
