Podcast Discussion on Addiction and Recent School Shooting

On a recent episode of “Joe Rogan Experience,” comedian Dave Landau shared his personal journey of addiction and recovery. He discussed the realities of his experiences in a raw, candid manner that’s becoming a trademark of his work.

During the conversation, they touched on the troubling school shooting in Minneapolis, where a man identifying as transgender opened fire in a Catholic school, tragically resulting in the deaths of two children and injuring others. Landau reflected on the broader implications of such violence, noting a trend that’s hard to ignore.

“There have been a series of school shootings, but it’s not all black and white,” he remarked. He went on to suggest that some individuals reach a point in their lives feeling isolated and unsuccessful, compounded by issues with their gender identity.

Landau also pointed out that there seems to be a connection between community struggles and the pharmaceutical industry, pointing out that many in the media are hesitant to discuss this relationship.

Touching on his own experiences with mental health medications, he revealed that after a decade of taking Zoloft, he faced significant challenges when trying to stop. Despite expressing that the medication was worsening his depression, medical professionals encouraged him to continue.

Landau has battled addiction to several substances over the years, emphasizing the importance of maintaining sobriety. “After just five days off Zoloft, I felt a clarity I hadn’t experienced in years, even though the withdrawal was tough,” he said.

When asked what led him to seek help, Landau recounted that it was triggered by the death of his mother, who was bipolar and took antidepressants before her passing. Though he went to doctors for help, they often prescribed him similar treatments.

His struggles began much earlier, stemming from a challenging childhood where his father, a Vietnam veteran, battled health issues after exposure to toxic substances during the war. “The VA wasn’t much help. They denied my mom’s claims, leaving our family in a tough spot,” he recalled.

The combination of familial trauma and genetic predisposition resulted in self-medication during his teenage years, leading to a wild phase of substance use. At one point, his behavior became so erratic that he ended up in a psychiatric facility, where he amusingly recounts an encounter with a roommate he thought was a werewolf.

As graduation approached, a perceptive teacher recognized Landau’s comedic potential amidst the classroom chaos and encouraged him to explore comedy. With family support, he pursued opportunities at Second City, a renowned improv theater.

Comedy became a vital outlet for him, providing relief from his struggles. He recalls, “Finding that outlet was fantastic—it was a revelation.” However, addiction continued to shadow him, especially during his early career as a touring comic.

In 2009, after multiple arrests and the looming threat of prison, Landau made the decision to get sober. It was a challenging path, balancing the sobriety and the need for constant vigilance, but he ultimately emerged victorious.

Now, at age 43, Landau co-hosts the comedy show “Normal World” at Blaze Media, sharing his wild and humorous anecdotes while also addressing serious issues like mental health and addiction. His book, “One Party: Fuzzy Memoirs,” details his journey and the lessons learned along the way. Today, he cherishes family life with his wife and young son, fostering healthier memories and stability.
