Dave Portnoy Addresses Antisemitic Sign at Barstool Sports Bar in Philadelphia

Controversy Surrounds Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy

Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, posted a video on social media platform X, requesting an emergency press conference. This was in response to an incident involving a bar in Philadelphia where a sign reading “F*** Jews” was displayed.

Portnoy expressed surprise, stating he had never received complaints about the venue, typically known for its ambiance and bottle service. “It’s usually a great bar,” he reflected. However, the sign’s appearance made him feel a surge of anger and concern over rising anti-Semitism.

“I experienced more hatred and anti-Semitism than I did last year,” he mentioned.

Following the incident, Portnoy terminated the employment of two waitresses associated with the display of the sign. He mentioned their complicity in the acts of anti-Semitism and indicated he was on a mission to uncover those responsible.

The situation garnered significant media attention, prompting Portnoy to discuss the matter with reporters after they reached out for commentary.

Despite his frustrations, Portnoy felt annoyed by some media interactions. He claimed, after being misquoted, that the blame directed at Barstool was unwarranted and that his company didn’t foster such hateful attitudes.

“I’m incredibly angry,” he stated about the sign’s presence. “I was really shaking for hours,” he continued, emphasizing his determination to respond decisively.

In a passionate declaration, he vowed to hold those responsible accountable, indicating he was actively investigating the incident, describing the individuals involved as “one of the stupidest” he’s encountered.

Portnoy also made contact with a Temple University student linked to the social media posts associated with the incident. The university’s president has since vowed to identify those involved in the incident.

“Anti-Semitism is abhorrent. It has no place here,” the university president asserted.

Portnoy acknowledged that his initial response was to “destroy” those responsible. However, after a conversation with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, he considered organizing a trip to Auschwitz as a learning opportunity for those involved, aiming to transform the negative situation into a teachable moment.

An apology regarding the incident has been issued, though it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve further.
