Michigan State’s Football Coaching Change: A Prominent Reaction

A notable alumnus has expressed strong support for the recent coaching hire at Michigan State.

Following the announcement that the University of Michigan is closing in on an agreement with former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, Dave Portnoy took to social media. This move comes after the dismissal and subsequent arrest of Sherone Moore earlier this month.

Reports from ESPN indicate that Whittingham’s contract spans five years.

In a post on X, Portnoy wasted no time in declaring the hiring a significant victory for a program currently facing challenges. His enthusiasm was evident as he commented, “the very king of college football is back on top!”

However, Portnoy voiced initial concerns about the coaching search. “I was a bit worried, I have to admit. I really hoped the decision-makers knew what they were doing,” he said, adding that he didn’t even know who was leading the search but wished for a solid plan since time was ticking.

He pointed out that Michigan had shown little interest in luring Alabama’s head coach, Karen DeBoer, instead favoring Kenny Dillingham from Arizona State—who, interestingly, just received an extension to remain at ASU.

That said, Portnoy believes Whittingham’s hiring is a sure thing.

“I see him as one of the greatest coaches college football has ever seen,” Portnoy remarked. “He’s developed a tough, physical style of football akin to a true Michigan man. In a meeting for ‘The Big Noon Kickoff,’ I heard Urban Meyer mention that ‘Whittingham is the best coach I’ve ever seen.’

Having led Utah for 22 years, Whittingham boasts 177 bowl game wins—a school record—and a solid career record of 11-6. Portnoy hints that a “dynasty” could very well be beginning at Michigan.

With Michigan State contemplating its next steps after Moore’s firing—prompted by severe allegations, including an inappropriate relationship with a staff member and related criminal charges—they cast a shadow over the team.

Michigan still has one game left this season, facing Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
