Under no circumstances should you refer to this Chicago sports radio personality and columnist by his last name.
Dan Bernstein There's a target on your back After Stoolies took issue with an on-radio exchange with Barstool Eddie, Eddie called him “Bernstein.”
Eddie hosted a four-hour afternoon drive radio show with Matt Spiegel on 670 The Score last Thursday, which led to the “Bernstein & Holmes” show.
As the hosts of the two shows spoke on the air as a handoff, Eddie called Bernstein by his last name.
Apparently this won't work.
“You can call me Dan or you can call me Burnsy, but you don't know me that way,” Bernstein said after Eddie was informed of his infraction.
Lawrence Holmes, co-host of Bernstein's evening radio show, turned to Bernstein and asked, “What did he call you?”
“Bernstein,” Bernstein replied sarcastically, sneering.
The exchange, caught on camera during a live stream of the show, infuriated Barstool founder Dave Portnoy and other staff at the company on Tuesday.
“Look at these motherfuckers!! This was after an interview with @dan_bernstein,” Portnoy wrote to X. “The informants have never had a more important fight than ruining this man's life (professionally speaking of course). All our troops need to be focused on Bernstein. What an idiot.”
They then used their vast army of loyal supporters to attack Bernstein, who has yet to respond to the exchange.
“Dan Bernstein has been a mainstay in Chicago sports for as long as I can remember….Lately he's become a miserable asshole who is always in a bad mood.” Eddie said in the X video:
“Plus, he hates Barstool…he has always found a way to attack us on air…The important context here is that I was not in the same studio as Bernstein. I was in front of a remote control at the sporting goods store. I never read body language or anything like that. When I heard it, I had a hunch that he was in a bad mood…I called him Bernstein about seven times. Not everyone there was in a bad mood…I did not say it to upset him. How can anyone in their right mind think that saying someone's last name would upset someone? I honestly don't get it.”
Reports on Tuesday said Bernstein's show had to stop taking calls from listeners because Barstool fans were flooding the phone lines.
Bernstein's post on X has been flooded with comments mocking him in one way or another since Tuesday.
