David Fry Injured After Foul Tip During Guardians-Tigers Game

A frightening moment occurred during the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers game at Progressive Field on Tuesday night. In the sixth inning, David Fry of the Guardians was struck in the face by a foul tip while attempting a bunt. The Guardians were trailing 2-1 at the time, with a runner on base.

As Fry faced Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal’s 99 mph fastball, things took a disastrous turn. The ball came too far inside, and Fry’s bat tipped it towards his face instead of down into the field. It was alarming. Fry instantly dropped to the ground, clutching his face, while Skubal and the players on the field were visibly shaken by the incident.

The medical team rushed to Fry, who eventually stood up with blood running down his face. Sadly, that was the end of his night, as he had to be carted off the field.

As for the game, Fry’s misfortune didn’t stop play. The foul ball counted, bringing the count to 2-2. Pinch hitter George Valera took over Fry’s position and continued batting for the remainder of the game.

After the incident, things didn’t improve for Skubal either. His first pitch following the accident was wild, allowing a runner on base and eventually leading to a tying score for the Guardians. Further complications ensued when Skubal balked, granting another runner a free pass and helping the Guardians take a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning.

Skubal is known for his skills on the mound—he recently won the 2024 CY Young Award and boasts a 2.23 ERA this season. However, this incident could certainly be something worth pondering in the grand scheme of things.

The game had significant playoff stakes, as the Guardians were just one game behind the Tigers heading into this crucial series. Each match really counts at this point in the season, especially with the World Series spotlight looming in October.
