David Henrie on Faith and Career Challenges
David Henrie, who gained fame from his role in “Wizards of Waverly Place,” recently shared on a podcast about the personal costs he faced in Hollywood after embracing his faith. During his conversation on the “Bryce Crawford Podcast,” he spoke candidly about the challenges he experienced due to his beliefs.
“It was tough; I lost my agents,” Henrie explained. “I walked away from many opportunities and turned down several roles. I just felt I couldn’t participate in projects that I believed would go against my values or disrespect our Lord. This decision cost me a lot—financially, socially, even my relationship at the time. I felt isolated, losing touch with those I considered friends.” However, he also noted that this experience led him to form new friendships that ultimately enriched his life, including meeting his now-wife.
Describing the positive aspects of his journey, Henrie stated, “I found new friendships with people who encouraged my faith.” He elaborated, “Friendship is like an elevator; it can either elevate you or bring you down. I made connections that uplifted me and helped guide my spiritual growth.” He also expressed that some former friends have since re-entered his life, having evolved in their perspectives. “I hear from them now and they’re saying things like, ‘I went to church this Sunday,’ which honestly surprised me,” he shared. “It’s a marath—it’s not a sprint.”
In his earlier discussions with Fox News Digital, Henrie remarked that the entertainment industry has become more open to faith-based themes than it was in the past. He mentioned that he frequently encounters executives looking for content that reflects faith, commenting on the underrepresentation of such narratives in media.
Since becoming a father, Henrie’s commitment to storytelling with moral significance has deepened. He expressed a desire to leverage his skills to create stories that resonate with families. “I wanted to utilize my gifts to explore larger storytelling avenues,” he highlighted, referring to his recent initiative, Novo Inspire Studios, aimed at producing meaningful content.
Commenting on Henrie’s sacrifices for his faith, entrepreneur David Friedman noted that his experiences reflect the complexities of maintaining one’s beliefs in a culture that may hold opposing views. “Those losses stem from fundamental differences in how one views human flourishing,” Friedman asserted. He drew parallels with historical figures like Eric Liddell, who famously refused to compete on Sundays, suggesting such choices resonate deeply for anyone whose faith is central to their identity.
Entertainment journalist DeWayne Hamby noted that Hollywood decision-makers might feel uneasy about those who diverge from the norm. “There’s an element of unpredictability that can be intimidating for those in charge,” he remarked, reflecting on Henrie’s experiences with job rejections.
