HOUSTON (AP) — Actress Akili McDowell, who starred in the TV series “David Makes Man” and has also appeared in “Billions” and “Astronaut Wives Club,” has been charged with shooting and killing a man in a Houston apartment parking lot, authorities said.
McDowell, 21, was charged last week with shooting and killing Cesar Peralta, 20, on July 20, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. McDowell was being held on $400,000 bail on the murder charge and remained in custody Monday. His attorney, listed in court records, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
“This is an unfortunate situation and I am praying for Akili and all those affected by this tragedy,” his manager, Jonel Witt, said, adding that there would be no further comment.
The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment building on July 20 and found a man unconscious after being shot. Witnesses told deputies the man had been in an argument with another man, who fled on foot after the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.
“David Makes Man,” which aired on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN, follows McDowell’s character, a teenager named David, as he tries to juggle his relationships with his magnet school friends and drug dealers in his impoverished South Florida neighborhood.
According to entertainment database IMDb, McDowell has appeared in several episodes of Billions and The Astronaut Wives Club, as well as the recently released film The Waterboys.
