David Montgomery addresses trade rumors involving the Lions on social media

David Montgomery, running back for the Detroit Lions, has reacted to rumors suggesting he wants to leave the team after spending the last three seasons there. This is quite surprising for a veteran known around the Motor City as “Knuckles.”

On social media, he responded, using sarcasm to address an ESPN report. He posted a somewhat exasperated message following the news that the Lions might seek a “decent third-day pick” if they were to trade him.

The 28-year-old, who began his career with the Chicago Bears, has found success with the Lions. The addition of Jahmil Gibbs to the roster has led to an exciting dynamic, with fans referring to them as the “Sonic and Knuckles” duo. Gibbs, a first-round pick in 2023, has made significant strides in his career, leading the NFL in rushing yards and touchdowns in 2024 and continuing to perform well into 2025.

During the last season, Montgomery accumulated 716 rushing yards and eight scores. He’s primarily served as a short-yardage back within a strong Lions offense, but it seems Gibbs has emerged as the primary choice moving forward.

Montgomery’s contract runs through 2027, meaning if he truly wanted to leave, a trade would be necessary. His recent tweet might suggest otherwise, though. Speculation about possible new teams for him has arisen, particularly if the Seattle Seahawks decide not to retain their unrestricted free agent, Kenneth Walker III.

It’s uncertain if the Lions will look to part ways with Montgomery, but he appears content in one of the most dynamic offenses in the league at the moment.

With the Lions currently over the salary cap, they are gearing up for free agency and the NFL Draft, and Montgomery is slated for an $8.3 million cap hit in 2026.
