The Detroit Lions are heading to Lambeau Field to face the Green Bay Packers as 2.5-point underdogs. The total points are set at 47.5, making it one of the highest scoring matches of the weekend. The Lions still have a strong core—a group that averaged 33 points per game last season, the best in the league. Despite the loss of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Bears, raising some concerns about their efficiency, they’re likely to remain among the top five teams in scoring.
Regarding running backs, David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs both have fantasy potential. Montgomery, a key player at the goal line for a high-scoring offense, has been solid. Gibbs showcased his abilities, especially after Montgomery sustained a knee injury later in the previous season, where he even topped the league in PPR fantasy points.
Now healthy, Montgomery is back and ready to contribute. The team is cautious about overloading Gibbs, wanting him to conserve energy for a strong finish, though new offensive coordinator John Morton might adjust their playing time distribution.
As we kick off week one, let’s take a closer look at David Montgomery’s fantasy prospects.
Fantasy Football Analysis: Lions, RB, David Montgomery
Last season, Montgomery ranked as a fantasy RB11 before facing that knee injury, totaling 16 touches for 83 yards and 12 touchdowns. If his touches reduce to around 10, that could indicate an issue. However, if he maintains those touches and keeps his goal-line role, he could still be a dependable fantasy option.
The Packers are expected to present a tough challenge on the ground, given they ranked eighth in rushing EPA allowed per play and seventh in total rushing yards allowed last season. Nonetheless, I’m willing to give Montgomery the benefit of the doubt until he proves he can still be a touchdown threat while accumulating good yardage.
Will you start or sit in the first week of PPR league?
Start. He plays exceptionally well in standard leagues, but he also doesn’t shy away from receptions, averaging 2.6 per game last year.
Are you starting or sitting in the standard league in the first week?
Start. I feel more confident in starting him in a standard league. If you’re in a smaller PPR league, it might be wise to bench him for a better option.
