David Stearns Addresses Mets’ Roster Changes

David Stearns is aware of the strong reactions stemming from the Mets’ recent roster overhaul, which has uprooted a longtime core of players.

He feels that allowing Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz to leave via free agency, along with trading Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil, was a necessary strategy to position the franchise as a consistent contender for the World Series.

In his initial public remarks following a challenging offseason at the winter meetings, Stearns described the roster shifts as “tough.” Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about the Mets’ prospects both now and for the future.

“We’re dedicated to making the next five years more successful for the Mets under our ownership,” Stearns shared during a luncheon with reporters at Citi Field on Tuesday. “We aim to win more games and meet the high expectations we all have.”

“What we’ve done so far hasn’t been sufficient. That’s clear, and I recognize it. We need to improve, and we’re committed to that.”

The Mets have made some key acquisitions, adding Jorge Polanco at first base, Marcus Semien at second base, and bolstering their bullpen with Devin Williams and Luke Weaver.

Stearns believes that the Mets, while making defensive progress, may see a dip in offensive output. Still, he asserts that the team is solid even before making additional moves.

“We possess elite talent at the top of our major league roster,” he noted. “We have a strong farm system and a competent current team. By Opening Day, we anticipate being even better.”

“We fully comprehend that this offseason has been frustrating for our fans. I’m not oblivious to it; I hear it from friends and family. But I’m also very confident that the direction we’re taking is right for the franchise as we move forward to achieve our goals.”
