David Tyree advises Giants to bench Jaxson Dart as 'risks' increase

Concerns Surround Giants’ Rookie Quarterback

David Tyree believes it’s “too risky” for the Giants to let rookie quarterback Jackson Dart continue playing this season. The Super Bowl XLII hero thinks that with the team’s struggles—currently standing at 2-12—veteran backup Jameis Winston should take over the starting role for what remains of the regular season.

Dart, who was picked 25th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, has shown some promise, demonstrating that he could be part of the solution at quarterback. He’s willing to take hits and handle the pressure, which is admirable. However, he’s also faced health issues, notably a concussion that sidelined him briefly during Sunday’s game.

When asked about the need to keep Dart safe from himself, Tyree responded, “Ever since I saw Jameis Winston, my focus has shifted to sitting Jackson Dart.” He continued, “I think the Giants’ initial strategy—getting a talented rookie and allowing him to learn—was sound. Winston can bring both excitement and a proven track record. He’s more than just a media figure; he’s capable of producing results on the field.”

Tyree elaborated, saying, “Based on everything we’ve seen, it’s crucial to ensure Dart is drafted and developed properly. The positives are there, and there’s potential for something special. But, given the financial implications for the Giants, it’s a considerable risk.” He has questions about the front office’s decision-making, especially when it comes to investing in backup quarterbacks as they navigate the future.

This season, with Dart out due to his concussion, Winston had started previously against the Packers and Lions. During those games, he tallied 567 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, even scoring a touchdown himself against Green Bay.

Interestingly, Dart had initially taken over as starting quarterback in Week 4 after Russell Wilson led the team to three losses at the beginning of the season. Looking ahead, the Giants are set to finish off the year against the Vikings, Raiders, and Cowboys, teams that might not pose the greatest challenges down the line.
