Special counsel David Weiss, who previously tried to get Hunter Biden to cut a “sweet” plea deal, thanked Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday for granting him the “independence” to prosecute the president’s son.
A jury on Tuesday found Hunter guilty of three firearms-related charges. Speaking to reporters in Washington, D.C., after the verdict, Judge Weiss praised Judge Garland for his “independence in conducting the investigation and prosecution appropriately.”
“I want to thank Attorney General Garland for providing us with the support we need to accomplish our mission and ensuring the independence to properly pursue investigations and prosecutions,” he said.
“As you know, we have additional judicial and investigative work remaining, so we will not be responding to questions at this time. Our work continues,” he added.

This “sweet” deal was slammed in court after Judge Marylen Noreika scrutinized the agreement due to concerns it was “unusual” and “not straightforward.” The special deal did not go ahead.
Judge Weiss then offered Hunter a second plea bargain on the firearms charges, but Hunter rejected it, choosing to stand trial in Delaware.
After a flurry of gun-related cases, Judge Weiss indicted Hunter on a California tax evasion charge in 2023. The trial is scheduled for September 2024.
