Dawn Staley’s Reflections on NBA Coaching Opportunities for Women

Dawn Staley has an impressive track record, including being a six-time WNBA All-Star and an Olympic gold medalist. She’s also known for leading the South Carolina women’s basketball team to three NCAA Division I championships.

Recently, Staley was in the spotlight after the New York Knicks considered her for the head coaching role following Tom Thibodeau’s departure in early June. Ultimately, they opted for Mike Brown instead.

This week, Staley shared her thoughts about the interview process and the NBA’s attitude toward hiring female coaches, expressing concerns about whether franchises are truly ready for that change.

She emphasized that some teams might hesitate to accept the inevitable scrutiny a female coach could face, especially during tough times. “If I’m coaching the Knicks and the team loses five games in a row, the focus won’t just be on the losing streak; it’ll be on me being a female coach,” Staley mentioned in an interview.

She believes that organizations looking to hire a woman as a coach need to be resilient against the criticisms that might arise. “If there’s an NBA franchise interested in hiring women, they better be prepared to handle the associated challenges,” Staley added.

When asked about her confidence in seeing a woman appointed as an NBA head coach in the near future, Staley expressed doubt, saying, “No, not really. And I hope I’m wrong.”

Staley also talked about her close relationships with Knicks executive Leon Rose and others within the organization. “I’m someone who values human connection,” she noted. Her long-standing ties made the interview process feel genuine to her.

She also encouraged other women interested in coaching in the NBA to reach out to her. “If anyone wants to know more about being the first female NBA coach, I have lots of information and I’d be happy to help,” she said.

In April, Staley’s Gamecocks were defeated by the University Huskies in the women’s national championship, and now her team is gearing up to start the 2025-26 season on November 3 against Grand Canyon.
