DC couple faces threats after numerous assaults on Israeli embassies since 1969

On Wednesday, an attack in Washington, D.C. resulted in the deaths of two employees from the Israeli embassy. This incident is part of a troubling pattern of assaults on Israeli targets worldwide. The victims, Jaron Lisinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were engaged to be married, and the shooting occurred near the Jewish museum in the capital. Witnesses reported that a suspicious individual shouted, “Free, free Palestine!” before being taken into custody.

This shooting intensifies the already heightened tensions linked to Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip, particularly after conflicts escalated earlier this week. It’s worth noting that since the outbreak of war on October 7, 2023, attacks on the embassy are increasingly concerning, though certainly not unprecedented.

Historically, there have been more than 30 terrorist attacks targeting Israeli embassies globally since 1969. For instance, the Israeli government has tracked several significant incidents. Such a long history of attacks illustrates how precarious the safety of diplomatic missions can be.

Looking back, the embassy has faced various threats. For instance, a protest event took place last February in which an active U.S. Air Force member set fire outside the embassy but fortunately did not injure anyone. Earlier, in 2012, a bombing in Delhi targeted diplomatic staff, injuring one woman seriously. In another major incident in 1992, a bombing in Buenos Aires killed 29 people, including several embassy employees.

Interestingly, witnesses from the recent attack mentioned that the archer confessed his motivations were tied to the situation in Gaza, saying, “I did this for Gaza.” This statement captures the complexity and emotional intensity surrounding the ongoing conflict.

In summary, the attack in D.C. underscores a long-standing history of violence against Israeli diplomatic missions. Though many previous incidents have ended without fatalities, the recent events serve as a somber reminder of the dangers facing diplomatic staff and the persistent tensions in the region.
