The National Guard’s presence in Washington D.C. has been extended until December as part of President Donald Trump’s initiative for federal law enforcement, according to officials.
This extension aims to ensure that the guard members stationed in D.C. maintain their benefits and pay as they engage in missions that might stretch over several months, as indicated by officials.
Some sources, who wished to remain anonymous, mentioned that while not every one of the 950 security personnel will be on duty until late December, it strongly suggests that their assignment isn’t ending anytime soon. These officials, however, are not authorized to speak publicly.
Ordinarily, guard members need to serve more than 30 days on active duty to qualify for certain benefits like housing allowances and healthcare, and multiple extensions can sometimes create complications.
Guards from a Republican-led state have also been sent into Washington, with the length of their deployment being determined by the state’s governor.
A spokesperson from the joint task force overseeing security in Washington directed follow-up questions to the White House. In response, officials indicated that Trump is focused on ensuring the long-term safety and security of Washington.
National Guard leaders are expected to start releasing guidelines regarding military leave and holiday policies for deployed personnel soon.
The task force also acknowledged on Monday that they are aware of the concerns regarding wages and benefits for members of the Colombian Joint Task Force area.
They stated, “While there are exceptions, most service members will be mobilized under orders lasting over 30 days to ensure they’re eligible for full benefits.”
