DC Police Union Backs Trump’s Crime-Fighting Measures

On Monday, the DC Police Union announced its support for President Donald Trump’s initiatives aimed at addressing crime in Washington, DC. In a statement, they recognized the president’s intent to consider temporary management of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in light of the worsening crime situation.

Union Chairman Greg Pemberton expressed concerns over the current level of crime, stating it has become “out of control” and that officers are being “stretched beyond their limits.” He emphasized the need for the city to change its trajectory regarding crime rates.

“We’re standing with the president,” Pemberton stated firmly.

While he viewed Trump’s proposed federal intervention as a “critical halt,” he also pointed out the essential need for improved staffing and support. Pemberton argued that achieving this requires changing the policies that have led to the departure of experienced leaders and hindered recruitment efforts.

In a related development, Trump signed an executive order on Monday to deploy the National Guard in a bid to combat violent crime in the capital, formally declaring a crime emergency in the area.

The president had previously suggested in a post that the district’s homeless population should be moved “far from the capital.” This push to tighten control comes after a series of violent incidents in the district, including the tragic murder of two Israeli embassy staff members in May, the shooting death of a Congressional intern in July, and a brutal assault on a young employee in August.
