Washington D.C. Encourages Tourism Amid Government Shutdown

As the federal government remains closed since October 1, 2025, Washington D.C.’s official tourism board has initiated a campaign titled “DC is Open” to invite Americans to visit the city.

The campaign promotes the message that the capital offers numerous activities, dining options, and attractions, and is eager to welcome visitors despite the ongoing shutdown.

Destination DC (DDC) emphasizes that the city remains a viable option for both business and leisure travelers, even during this challenging time. DDC President and CEO Elliott L. Ferguson II reassured potential visitors that the majority of D.C.’s attractions are operational.

“People might think a government shutdown means D.C. is also closed, but that’s not the case,” he stated.

This fall season is particularly active for conventions and leisure travel, according to Ferguson, making it essential to communicate that visitors can still explore famous sites, enjoy comfortable accommodations, dine at renowned restaurants, and partake in various entertainment options.

The “DC is Open” campaign was first launched during the 2013 government shutdown and was revived in 2021 to support the city’s recovery post-pandemic.

Despite the shutdown, outdoor parks and monuments on the National Mall remain accessible, although certain visitor centers and ranger-led services are experiencing limitations. Private museums—including the Museum of the Bible and the National Building Museum—will continue to operate, while the Smithsonian Institution and National Zoo are currently closed.

Last year, D.C. welcomed 27.2 million visitors who collectively spent around $11.4 billion, highlighting the significance of tourism to the city’s economy.

In addition, various sporting events involving local teams like the Washington Commanders and Capitals are ongoing, providing more entertainment options for visitors.

Public transportation, including subways, is functioning as usual, and essential city services continue, maintaining a level of normalcy despite the shutdown. “The National Mall isn’t shut down; it just feels a bit quieter,” DDC noted.

The tourism board has suggested activities for visitors, such as a walk from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial at sunrise or an evening tour with illuminated monuments. Enjoying a coffee from local cafés while exploring the area is also recommended.

While the city may be subdued, Washington D.C.’s restaurants are open and eager to serve both locals and visitors. Whether it’s sharing a brunch or enjoying a fine dining experience, the dining scene remains vibrant.

The government shutdown is entering its fourth week due to a stalled federal funding plan in the Senate. Recently, House Republicans approved a Continuing Resolution aimed at extending government spending for an additional seven weeks, allowing time for Congressional discussions on a long-term budget agreement.
