Tragedy Strikes British Columbia School
Rural communities in British Columbia are in shock after a gunman reportedly opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Middle School on Tuesday, resulting in nine deaths and injuring dozens more. The police announced that the suspect died from self-inflicted injuries.
Initial reports confirmed nine fatalities and at least 25 injuries. Six of the deceased were found inside the school, while another succumbed to injuries en route to a local hospital. Additionally, two people were found dead in a nearby home, believed to be linked to the shooting. The identities and ages of these victims have not been disclosed.
As news of an active shooter spread, the community of about 2,000 residents was locked down around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, preventing parents from reaching the school to check on their children. Minister of Public Safety and Attorney General of B.C., Nina Krieger, referred to the incident as “one of the worst mass shootings in the history of our state and country.”
Krieger expressed her concern in a statement, highlighting the ongoing crisis in Tumbler Ridge. “This is a devastating day for our close-knit community; the loss we feel is profound. There are truly no words,” she said.
She thanked law enforcement and first responders, noting that RCMP officers were on the scene within two minutes of receiving the call. “Their speed and professionalism saved lives today, and I’m grateful to all those who acted swiftly to assist our community in such a terrifying moment,” she added.
An emotional response from the broader community came from various leaders, including Obby Khan, who shared his condolences and support. “No community should have to endure such pain,” he remarked, urging for strength among those affected.
The active shooter alert was reportedly lifted by 5:45 p.m. Meanwhile, a 12th-grade student described his experience, saying he was barricaded for over two hours. “It felt like I was in a situation I’d only seen on television,” he recounted.
Authorities are facing challenges in uncovering the motive behind what now stands as the deadliest school shooting in the nation’s history. Tumbler Ridge Middle School serves students from grades 7 through 12, offering both academic and extracurricular programs.
