A New York man lunged at a police officer responding to a 911 call at his home with a knife on Saturday morning, stabbing the rookie officer multiple times before another officer shot and killed him, body camera video showed. It became clear.
Suffolk County Deputy Police Chief Robert Waring told a news conference outside Stony Brook University Hospital, where the injured officer was treated, that the suspect’s wife told a dispatcher that her husband had been violent. He said he did.
Three officers responded around 9:10 a.m. and two approached the front door. As soon as they went up to the porch, Waring said Tykel Woodson, 33, lunged at them with a large knife.

Waring said the officer fell down the stairs and landed in the snow on his front lawn. Woodson jumped at him and stabbed him multiple times in the right arm, then tried to stab him in the chest.
“Woodson grabbed a knife and jumped on top of the officer and began stabbing him, clearly trying to kill him,” Mr Waring said.

A second officer attempted to use a Taser.
When that failed, the third officer opened fire. The entire fight lasted about five seconds, Waring said.
Doctors said the officer had additional injuries to his face, hands and arms, and required a tourniquet at the scene to stop the bleeding.
Police and paramedics attempted life-saving measures on Woodson, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The stabbed officer was driven to a local hospital where emergency room staff “stabilized” him before being flown by helicopter to a larger hospital in Stony Brook, where doctors diagnosed “complicated” wounds and injuries to his dominant hand. Possible nerve damage was treated.
“We’re very lucky he’s alive,” Dr. James Boswinkel told reporters outside the hospital in a news conference shared on the police department’s Facebook page. “Overall, these injuries were not life-threatening.”

Mr Waring said none of the three officers involved had been on the job for more than a year and a half, and praised their training and response.
“Let me be clear: this was a justified shooting,” he said. “Without the decisive action of these officers, one of our officers would have been killed…We are grateful that these officers can go home to their families.”
