Democratic presidential candidate Congressman Dean Phillips (Minnesota) said President Biden is showing signs of decline in physical ability and communication skills, amid concerns about the president's age in the run-up to re-election.
“Look, I'm an American, I want to respect the president. I respect President Biden,” Phillips told Fox News' Sean Hannity.
“We don't see any cognitive decline. Of course we do see physical and communication decline. I think that's evident in any video you watch, but I don't think that's fair,” Phillips said. continued. “But he's an 81-year-old man. He's a human being. Donald Trump is 77.”
Biden is currently 81 years old, but will be 86 by the end of his second term. Amid the 2024 presidential campaign, his age is frequently discussed as people argue that it is time for a younger leader and are concerned about his health.
Former President Trump has attacked Biden because of his age, and recently trolled him with an ad that referred to the White House as a senior housing facility. Trump is not much younger than Biden, turning 78 in June.
In an interview Thursday, the Minnesota Democrat reiterated claims he has made throughout his campaign. Phillips said most of the country wants change and neither Biden nor Trump wants to be president again.
“Look, I'm running for change. I think we can do this better. I love my Republican colleagues. I love my Democratic colleagues,” he said.
Mr Phillips went on to say that “we are handing over the keys to this country” to both the far right and the far left, claiming he was part of a “weary centrist majority”.
Phillips finished second to Biden on Tuesday in New Hampshire, where Biden is not on the ballot. According to The Hill/Decision Desk headquarters, he received 19.6 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary.
He recently backed away from his original plan to halt his campaign by March 5 if he did not receive support, and as of Tuesday morning said he intended to remain in the race “as long as necessary” to face Trump. He said that.
