Debate Commission sticking to schedule amid Trump’s calls for earlier events

The Commission on Presidential Debates will proceed on its original schedule despite requests from former President Trump’s campaign to hold the event earlier.

The committee released its schedule last November, but the Trump campaign is asking organizers to propose earlier and more frequent debates in an effort to outdo President Biden on stage.

“CPD standards are […] It will take effect in early September. The commission will then extend debate invitations to qualified candidates,” CPD told FOX News Digital.

The commission added: “The CPD is progressing with production and broadcast plans for the four debate venues, as also announced on 20 November 2023.”

In response to Fox News’ Tuesday report, Trump campaign managers Chris Lacivita and Susie Wiles called the committee’s move “unacceptable” in a statement. It also sent invitations to “all U.S. television networks that wish to host a debate,” asking the Biden campaign to coordinate with them to schedule a debate “as soon as possible.”

President Trump has repeatedly called on his Democratic successor in the White House to join the debate in recent months. Radio personality Howard Stern interviewed Biden last week, and the president confirmed his intention to debate his Republican challenger.

Biden responded, “I’ll be somewhere, I don’t know when.” “I’m happy to discuss him.”

President Trump slammed the comment and insisted he was willing to discuss it at any time and under any circumstances.

Earlier this year, the Trump campaign sent a letter to the committee requesting that the debate date be expanded and moved forward.

“The committee should move up the schedule for the proposed 2024 debate to ensure more Americans have ample opportunity to see the candidates before they begin voting, and the committee is currently proposing “We will advocate for more debates to be added to the current schedule,” Rashvita said. Ahead of the interview with Stern, the Biden campaign had been tight-lipped about the president’s desire to debate, characterizing Trump’s emphasis on the issue as hopeless.

“If I were him, I would want to debate,” Biden told reporters in Nevada earlier this year. “He has nothing else to do.”

The first presidential debate is scheduled for September 16th at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. The second debate will be held on October 1st in Petersburg, Virginia, and the third debate will be held on October 9th in Salt Lake City. The vice presidential debate is scheduled for September 25th in Easton, Pennsylvania.

However, the Trump campaign pointed to the commission’s decision on Tuesday night, saying, “By refusing to move up the debate, we are doing a grave disservice to the American people, who should hear from both candidates before voting begins.” “There is,” he accused. Joe Biden will debate anytime, anywhere, anywhere, and Joe Biden himself just agreed to debate.”

“We are committed to making this happen, with or without the Commission on Presidential Debates. , we once again call on Joe Biden’s team to work with us to launch the debate “The American people deserve as soon as possible,” Lacivita and Wiles added.

This committee has hosted and produced presidential and vice presidential meetings for more than 30 years. general election debate. But two years ago, the Republican National Committee voted unanimously to stop working with the committee, saying it was biased against Republican candidates.
