Midtown Manhattan Shooter Had CTE, Autopsy Confirms

The gunman who committed a mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan in July, resulting in four fatalities, has been confirmed to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). This revelation comes from the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

According to the office’s announcement on Friday, Shane Tamura showed “clear diagnostic evidence” of low-stage CTE. This brain condition is progressive and linked to repeated head injuries.

In July, Tamura drove from Las Vegas to New York City with intentions to attack the NFL headquarters on Park Avenue. He killed a security guard, a Blackstone executive, a police officer, and a young employee of Rudin Management before ultimately taking his own life.

After the incident, authorities found a note in Tamura’s possession. In it, he detailed brain injuries sustained during his high school football career and criticized the NFL for hiding dangers associated with head injuries to protect profits.

“Study my brain please. I’m sorry,” Tamura reportedly wrote.

The NYC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed his diagnosis of CTE on Friday. They stated:

“Our neuropathology experts have detected unambiguous evidence of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in the brain tissue of the deceased. These findings are classified as low-stage CTE based on current criteria.”

They further explained that “CTE can be found in individuals with a history of recurring head trauma” and that research into the condition is ongoing.

In his note, Tamura also mentioned: “The league (NFL) knowingly concealed the dangers to our brains to maximize profits. They failed us.”
