A decomposing body was discovered Sunday afternoon after residents smelled an unbearable stench outside a Queens apartment building, police said.
The body of an unidentified adult was found by police near scaffolding outside 92-40 Queens Boulevard in Rego Park around 12:55 p.m., police said.

The NYPD said the body was so badly decomposed that it was impossible to determine the gender or identity, or whether a crime may have been a factor in the death.
Police said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
One longtime resident of the six-story building told the Post that he initially believed the odor, which had lingered for some time, was a dead rodent.
“That’s what I think [it was]” said Jerry Border. “Mice, rats, things like that.”
