Defense Secretary Pete Hegses has ordered the deployment of active striker brigade combat teams and air battalions to enhance security at the US southern border, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced over the weekend.
“As President Trump has directed, Defense Secretary Pete Hegses ordered the deployment of the Striker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) and the general support air battalion, strengthening current border security operations, sealing and protecting borders, and protecting the integrity of the US territory, the president’s priority.
“These forces will arrive in the coming weeks, and their deployment underscores the unwavering dedication of the department to secure southern borders and working with the Department of Homeland Security to maintain US sovereignty, territorial integrity and security under President Trump's leadership,” he said.
The US Northern Command (Northcom) said it would already head to the border to increase units there from elements of the 2nd Striker Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division in Fort Carson, Colorado. The location of their deployment is not disclosed at this time.
Soldiers from the Striker Brigade are being built around Striker, an eight-wheeled armored combat vehicle, and will carry out detection and monitoring. Management support. Transportation support. Warehouse support and logistic support. Vehicle maintenance; engineering support. They will not implement or engage in blocking or deporting operations.
According to Northcom, Strykers were last deployed in 2012 at the border in the southern US.
Approximately 500 soldiers from the 3rd Fighter Air Brigade from Fort Stewart, Georgia will assist in the movement of personnel, equipment and supplies, and medical evacuation.
The 19th Public Relations Association from Fort Riley, Kansas provides public relations support.
“These deployments provide additional agility and capabilities to further efforts to stop the flow of illegal immigration and drugs at the tropical border,” Northcomb Commander General Gregory Guillott said in a statement.
Additional forces will bring about approximately 9,000 active duty troops deployed at the tropical border to around 9,000, Northcomb said.
This year, the Trump administration added 1,600 active duty troops to the border, up 60%. This takes into consideration securing borders.
