The Cleveland Browns started last season with a very full quarterback lineup. Shedeur Sanders stepped up as the starting quarterback in Week 12 and continued for the remainder of the season after a couple of impressive starts. His performance has positioned him as one of the standout rookies heading into the fifth round of the 2025 draft.
Deion Sanders, a two-time Super Bowl champion and Shedeur’s father, shared his thoughts on his son’s rookie year. He acknowledged that while he expected more from Shedeur, the young quarterback also needs ample support as he develops.
Sanders commented, “I would have liked him to perform a little better, but it’s a team issue as much as an individual one.” He discussed this during a conversation with Covers while representing their partnership with another brand.
He elaborated, explaining the reliance quarterbacks have on their offensive line, receivers, and running game. Unlike defensive backs who have more individual accountability, quarterbacks require coordinated efforts from the entire team to thrive.
Interestingly, although Shedeur is making strides, Browns’ GM Andrew Berry hasn’t confirmed his position as the starter for 2026. This uncertainty hangs over the team’s future plans.
In relation to the Browns’ recent decision to trade Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams, Sanders expressed confidence in GM Andrew Berry. “I’m happy with what Mr. Berry is doing. I won’t question the direction he’s taking,” he stated.
While unsure about all the nuances leading to that trade, he remains optimistic. “I wasn’t there, so I can’t speak to everything that went into it. I’m satisfied with what they got and am eager to see how it unfolds.”
In his rookie season, Shedeur wrapped up with a record of 3-4, throwing for seven touchdowns and ten interceptions.
