Joy Reid Reflects on Independence Day and World Cup Preferences

Joy Reid expressed that, as a Black person in America, she finds it difficult to celebrate Independence Day. And it seems she’s feeling similarly when it comes to Team USA’s performance at the World Cup.

On Monday, David Zirin, a sports editor at The Nation, shared his wish for the U.S. to lose to Belgium, suggesting this would prevent President Trump from “abusing” a victory.

“If the U.S. were competing against a Global South team, I would have preferred to cheer for them to win. There’s a risk of exploitation if they progress too far in the tournament,” Zirin commented.

Reid nodded, agreeing with his sentiment.

“That’s right,” she confirmed.

Interestingly, Reid declared she’s not solely backing Team USA. In fact, she’s openly cheering for an African nation to triumph in the World Cup.

“I’m rooting for all the African teams,” she stated. “I think it’s wonderful for the Global South if one of them takes home a significant victory.”

It’s somewhat amusing, isn’t it, that someone earning millions would criticize her own country while supporting it during such a major sports event? It’s certainly a unique way of showing gratitude to her viewers.

Honestly, that’s probably just what her audience, who sometimes lean toward anti-American views, wants to hear.

What stands out about Reid is her frankness. Many public figures who critique America, like her acquaintance Jemele Hill, often seem to follow a scripted role.

Too many individuals appear to be trying to emulate Reid, and, maybe, that’s unfortunate.

It’s likely that Reid spent the Fourth of July reflecting on America, perhaps mulling over its deep-rooted issues with racism.

Similarly, one can assume she may celebrate if the U.S. team were to lose in the World Cup. Yet, many Americans are sincerely hoping that doesn’t occur in the upcoming match against Belgium.

Regarding Reid’s hopes for an African victory, as of Monday, just two teams remain in contention: Morocco and Egypt.

Currently, Egypt has the longest odds at +2500 at DraftKings, while Team USA and Morocco sit at about +2900. France is favored to win with odds of +180.
