Delaware Sen. Sarah McBride could become the first transgender person elected to Congress after winning Tuesday night's primary election.
McBride was virtually unopposed as the only candidate who raised money in the primary, winning the election with the endorsements of Delaware Senators Chris Coons and Tom Carper, as well as Rep. Lisa Blunt of Rochester, who is running to replace Carper in the Senate.
McBride has already In 2020, she won election to the Delaware State Senate, becoming the first transgender state senator in the United States. The 33-year-old activist-turned-politician argues that Congress needs more diverse representation.
Delaware's House seat has been held by a Democrat since 2010. In 2020, President Joe Biden defeated former President Donald Trump in the state by 19 points.
McBride has raised nearly $3 million in donations from supporters across the country. She first gained national attention at the 2016 Democratic National Convention as the first openly transgender person to speak at a major party convention.

McBride was the only candidate to raise money in the primary, and was endorsed by Delaware Sens. Chris Coons and Tom Carper and Rep. Lisa Blunt of Rochester.
McBride will now face one of two candidates in the Republican primary.
McBride's candidacy comes amid a fierce national debate over transgender policy, particularly as it relates to minors. Republican-leaning states have passed bills in recent years banning or restricting gender-reassignment services for minors, citing long-term health effects.

McBride argues the legislative effort is an example of “far-right” extremism.

“In 2020, I became the first openly transgender person elected to a state senator in the nation. I felt like America was paving the way for the future. But since then, the far right has attempted to scapegoat the LGBTQ community for their policy failures,” McBride wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “As they intensify their attacks on families and children, it has become even clearer that for our democracy to function, it must be inclusive of all of us. If elected, I will be the first openly transgender person to serve in Congress.”
