A special needs student may have been abused in the classroom by three teachers at a Delaware elementary school, police said.
A family in Smyrna, Delaware, met with school administrators after learning that their special needs children may be victims of abuse in the classroom.
Smyrna Police are investigating possible professional misconduct by three Smyrna Elementary School teachers. According to Fox 29, police are working with the state Attorney General’s Office Special Victims Unit, which is common in these types of investigations.
Parent Leslie Thomas told FOX 29: “Your child’s school is a place where you wouldn’t expect something like this to happen. It has to be a different school. My son is traumatized. “They even turn down the road that leads to Smyrna Elementary School.” So I couldn’t force him to go to a place that traumatized him. ”

The Smyrna School District released a statement Wednesday saying a report of possible professional misconduct was made on Feb. 16.
“As part of our multi-pronged approach to keeping our students safe, we have taken every precaution, including contacting law enforcement and providing alternative staff to supervise our students,” the statement said. “The investigation is active and ongoing.”
“While we cannot go into further detail as the investigation is ongoing, we can assure you that the professional misconduct being investigated is not sexual in nature,” the district said in a follow-up statement. Stated. “District staff came to the school to provide support to students, staff and affected parents.”
Some families contacted police and were told details of the charges, including children being locked in toilets and having objects thrown at them.

“The children were locked in the bathroom alone in the dark, their hair was pulled, things were thrown at them, they were physically given time-outs, and they were left alone in the bathroom in the dark,” parent Tierre Thomas told Fox 29. He was detained,” he said.
Leslie Thomas said she previously raised concerns with the school district after observing changes in her son this school year. She and other parents are petitioning the school district to transfer her students to another elementary school.
“We’re seeing aggression in him, he’s doing things he’s never done before, like hitting. He’s wincing and afraid of the dark. These are all things he’s never shown before. “These actions are consistent with previous allegations,” she said. “Most of his parents agree with North Smyrna, so for now they want to see them make that setting. Of course we all want to see the charges filed soon. I think I want to do.”
The police investigation could last several months.
