Rodriguez Responds to U.S. Treasury Secretary

Delcy Rodriguez, who is considered Venezuela’s “acting president,” addressed statements made by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday. She described his comments as “irrelevant and offensive,” asserting that Venezuela “does not take orders from any external source.”

During an event attended by international oil company representatives, Bessent started his speech by referencing the late Hugo Chávez, suggesting that some provocations should be ignored while others deserve a response.

“The U.S. Treasury Secretary has made inappropriate remarks that I feel compelled to respond to,” Rodriguez stated. “Venezuelans do not accept directives from outside forces. Our government exists to serve the people.”

She elaborated, saying, “There’s a mutual relationship between the Venezuelan populace and their leaders. I am honored to represent the Venezuelan people, especially in these challenging times. We are not following any external influences.”

In a recent interview, Bessent claimed that the United States effectively guides Venezuela’s policy and suggested sanctions would be gradually lifted. He emphasized that while the U.S. doesn’t run the country, it dictates policy. “Government members will stay in power and manage the country,” he noted.

He explained plans to sell oil and other resources, holding funds in escrow for the Venezuelan populace, and mentioned that free and fair elections would occur when the time is right. He also pointed out that Maria Corina Machado supports former President Trump’s approach.

Bessent referenced the significant changes for Venezuelans following a U.S. law enforcement operation on January 2, aimed at capturing Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who are now awaiting trial in the U.S. on serious charges.

Rodriguez reacted strongly to Bessent’s claims, making her own statements that same day. She mentioned that she was already aware of personal threats when she took on the role of acting president, asserting, “We are not afraid.”

She stressed the importance of a respectful relationship with the United States, predicated on mutual respect and adherence to international law. Interestingly, her comments came shortly after she indicated that she was “fully” directed by U.S. influence at another official event.
