FAA Investigates Drone Attack on Aircraft Near JFK Airport

Cheryl Casson from FOX Business discussed the increasing danger of drones near airports. Following an incident where a JetBlue plane was targeted, she highlighted how a helicopter nearly collided with a large toy drone. The challenge, she noted, is that tracking drones is tough since they don’t have transponders. As a result, the FAA has initiated a public safety campaign. They receive around 100 complaints monthly, and obstructing flights can result in fines up to $100,000.

In a separate incident, the FAA reported that a Delta Airlines flight encountered a fireworks mortar while descending into Chicago’s Midway International Airport on July 4th. Flight 1076, which had departed from Atlanta, landed without any injuries reported. The mortar struck as the aircraft approached the airport around 8:30 p.m. local time.

Carrying 52 passengers and six crew members, the Airbus A319 managed to land safely and taxi to the gate. A Delta representative stated that there was no emergency declared. Mechanics inspected the plane upon its arrival and reported no damage.

Interestingly, there was also a report of a near miss between a helicopter and a radio-controlled plane near JFK Airport. This incident has raised further concerns about air traffic safety.

In terms of the Delta flight, while Chicago Police mentioned that the fireworks caused minor paint damage, Delta asserted after a post-flight check that no issues were found. Still, the FAA has decided to conduct an investigation into the event.

Details surrounding the source of the fireworks remain vague, and it’s yet to be determined if any suspects have been identified. Delta Air Lines has indicated its willingness to collaborate fully with the FAA and other relevant authorities during the investigation.
