Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have begun cancelling flights to Israel following escalating violence in the region.

The airline’s announcement came after an Israeli airstrike killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, with Iran vowing revenge for the killing of its ally.

“We consider it our duty to take revenge against him,” Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said.

Both sides have traded rocket attacks in the conflict, and just days before the Hamas leader’s killing, Israel struck the Lebanese capital, Beirut, targeting a Hezbollah commander who had ordered the rocket attack, killing 12 Israeli children.

United Airlines released a statement detailing its plans to begin canceling flights to Israel.

“Beginning with tonight’s flight from Newark Liberty to Tel Aviv, we are suspending our daily service to Tel Aviv for safety reasons while we evaluate our next steps,” a United Airlines spokesperson said. “We will continue to closely monitor the situation and make any decision regarding resuming service with the safety of our customers and crew in mind.”

Delta Airlines has canceled flights to Israel through August 2nd, and United Airlines plans to cancel flights through August 6th.

Tens of thousands of Israelis are estimated to be stranded in the US due to flight cancellations.

The State Department website warns Americans to reconsider traveling to Israel, citing “terrorism and civil unrest.”

“Terrorist groups, lone terrorists, and other violent extremists continue to plan attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Terrorists and violent extremists could launch attacks with little or no warning, targeting tourist sites, transportation hubs, markets and shopping malls, and municipal facilities. Violence can occur without warning in Israel, the West Bank, or Gaza,” the State Department said on its website.
