Delta Air Lines Responds to AI Pricing Criticism

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian recently discussed the company’s advancements during the Kraman Countdown at CES 2025.

On Thursday, Delta announced that it does not utilize artificial intelligence for pricing its flights, in light of recent criticism from legislators.

The Atlanta-based airline communicated in a letter addressed to Democrats Reuben Gallego, Mark Warner, and Richard Blumenthal that its ticket prices are solely based on market dynamics and competition. The letter stated, “There are no algorithms Delta has employed to this date. We use tests or usage plans that focus on providing customers with individual prices, but we do not factor personal data into our pricing.” This clarification seems to signal the airline’s position on transparency.

The airline is reportedly testing AI-driven revenue management technology from Fetcherr to better forecast demand for specific routes and flights, adjust to purchasing trends, and adapt to changing market conditions, indicating an interest in exploring AI’s potential benefits.

However, the letter sent by Delta could have consequences; lawmakers had previously expressed concern that Delta might employ AI for determining individual ticket prices—situation that seems to have sparked some debate within the industry.

Senator remarks referenced comments from Delta President Glenn Hauenstein made in December, which indicated that their AI pricing technology could potentially set fares based on predictions of what consumers are willing to pay for premium offerings.

In a related note, last week, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom voiced concerns that implementing AI for ticket pricing could erode consumer trust. “This isn’t about misleading customers or using tricks,” Isom explained in a revenue call, emphasizing his skepticism regarding AI applications in pricing strategy.

Additionally, Delta mentioned that it is exploring AI to enhance various facets of its operations, such as addressing customer inquiries, refining solutions, and optimizing crew scheduling.
