Delta Air Lines Plans to Introduce Tiered Fares in Premium Cabins

If you’re looking to save a bit, flying first class might soon be more accessible. Delta Air Lines is set to roll out tiered pricing for both business and first class, allowing travelers the chance to snag a cheaper ticket in these sought-after cabins.

This announcement came during a recent press conference, where executives mentioned that changes could be implemented as soon as this year. Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, articulated the airline’s aim to establish “three categories for every product: basic, main, and extra.”

Essentially, when booking in premium cabins, customers will have an option of “basic” tickets in both first and business classes. However, these won’t include perks like free cancellations or loyalty points, as noted by Travel + Leisure.

Currently, if you’re a premium cabin flyer with Delta, you only have two options: Classic or Extra. Meanwhile, those flying in economy can choose from all three categories.

Base fares will be the least expensive option, but they come with drawbacks like late boarding and no seat reservations. The Classic fare, seen as Delta’s standard, might carry additional costs for extras such as earning miles or having refundable tickets.

Interestingly, Delta has already offered three fare types for economy and comfort classes. So, this change isn’t entirely new for them.

As passengers pick their fare tier, they’ll also choose their reward tier, adding layers to the traveler’s experience.

“I think we’ve been cautious in our approach,” commented Joe Esposito, Delta’s executive vice president, reflecting on their strategies. “We’re still piloting Comfort Basic and plan to broaden its availability throughout the year.”

Launched on November 19, Comfort Basic serves as a more streamlined version of the Comfort cabin, featuring extra legroom. According to The Points Guy, the benefits for these travelers include premium seats, early boarding, complimentary alcoholic beverages, and dedicated storage overhead.

However, it’s essential to note that Basic Flyers face limitations too—they can’t select their seats ahead of time, earn fewer SkyMiles, and will incur cancellation fees. While Delta is the first major airline in the U.S. to introduce lower-level fares in business classifications, some international carriers like Qatar Airways and Emirates already have similar offerings.
