Veteran journalist and CNN contributor Carl Bernstein said on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” on Wednesday that Democrats in the House and Senate have serious doubts about whether President Joe Biden can beat former President Donald Trump in November’s presidential election.
“Schumer is hearing from all sides, from senators and congressional donors, that as party leadership he has to do something to ensure there is an orderly process where the best candidate is nominated who can best beat and challenge Donald Trump, and there is significant doubt among Democratic senators, Democratic congressional donors as to whether that person is Joe Biden,” Bernstein said.
“There’s a big movement right now within the party against Joe Biden running, including among the senators and congressmen that Schumer is talking to, so we have an unprecedented situation here and he’s trying to prevent a partisan fight from happening,” he added.
Bernstein added, “There was a widespread view among House and Senate Democrats after the debate that Joe Biden was a weak candidate against Donald Trump, and that hasn’t changed. Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi know this better than anyone, and they are exploring whether there are alternative ways to move forward.”
