Democrats Challenge Detention Center Access
Democrat House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries from New York addressed the situation regarding arrests at ICE detention centers, emphasizing that criticisms of President Donald Trump from Democrats should not result in their arrests for trespassing.
In a conversation with a reporter at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, Jeffries criticized the administration, pointing to Trump’s declining approval ratings and accusing him of using intimidation tactics against political opponents.
“We are not threatened by their tactics,” he asserted. “It’s a red line. They know better than to go down that path.”
On Friday, some Democratic members of the U.S. House attempted to gain access to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Newark, New Jersey. The situation quickly became chaotic when they were denied entry, during which some agents reportedly faced assaults.
Additionally, Newark’s Democratic Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested, allegedly for trespassing along with activists and other Democrats. Baraka claimed that officials had been denied access to ensure safety and compliance with fire codes.
Jeffries dismissed calls for Democrats to be arrested or reprimanded for their actions. “We will not be intimidated into silence against their extremism,” he continued, questioning whether such actions would have taken place after Trump’s election given his unpopularity at the time. “It seems unlikely.”
Democrats argue they possess the authority to access federal centers. A spokesperson for Homeland Security noted that one Democrat was accused of assaulting an ICE officer and using body spray on female officers.
