Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan on Wednesday blamed “big-money” advertisers for Missouri Democratic Rep. Cori Bush’s loss in the primary.
Bush lost the primary to St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell on Wednesday, becoming the second of nine far-left House members to be ousted as a member of the “Squad.” After being pressed by CNN host Omar Jimenez on “CNN News Central” whether she thought the election results were due to voters’ current feelings, Tlaib placed the blame for the loss on super PACs that had funneled money to Bell’s campaign. “Cori’s campaign had $14 million in attack money flowing into her district, and I don’t think it can even be valued because that kind of money often comes in so quickly. In a media market, $14 million in St. Louis is comparable to $30 million in New York or California. That’s money flowing 24/7 on the radio, in the mail, everywhere. That’s extremely hard to beat, even for a candidate who is as grounded in the electorate as Cori Bush was,” Tlaib said.

“So let’s have a fair contest. Let’s get rid of this big money. It’s a fair contest, and I think the spending on Kohli would have been $2 million or $3 million, if it wasn’t $14 million. But all of this has to stop,” Tlaib continued. “Just pick your candidates based on their qualifications, what they say on the doorstep and on the phone. It’s not OK for big money to come in and try to buy elections. We’re seeing more and more of this in Jamal’s election, Kohli’s election and of course other elections across the country.”
Bush lost Missouri’s 1st Congressional District by 5.6 percentage points, but received 45.6% of the popular vote to Bell’s 51.2%. according to According to the New York Times, Bush’s loss came after fellow “Squad” member, Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York, lost in the June 25 primary.
Both far-left lawmakers faced backlash at the polls after repeatedly expressing pro-Palestinian support following the October 7 terror attacks on Israel.
Under the Bush Administration Concession speechThe congressman warned groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) should be “fearful” because they had “radicalised” her.
“AIPAC, I am coming to destroy your kingdom,” Bush said, “and I’m coming after all these corporations: I’m coming after you too!”
