Dem Rep. Dean Phillips blasts Biden after Hunter pardon, says some people ‘are indeed above the law’

Democratic lawmakers in the United States on Monday warned that certain people were “above the law” after President Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden, even though he had repeatedly said he had no intention of pardoning him. He said that it seems like there is.

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) reacted to Biden's decision to pardon Hunter on social media, slamming the president's own words earlier this year that “no one is above the law.”

“Let me say the quiet part out loud: Some Americans are certainly above the law, and influence is always for sale,” Phillips wrote to X. “The time has come for a weary majority to denounce and stand up against legalized corruption.”

President Biden announced a sweeping pardon on Sunday after Hunter Biden repeatedly said he would not pardon him. The eldest son was convicted in two separate federal cases earlier this year. He pleaded guilty to federal tax charges in September and was convicted in June of three felony gun counts for falsely stating on a mandatory gun purchase form that he did not use the weapon illegally or was addicted to drugs. The president said in a statement that Hunter was “singularly chosen simply because he is my son” and claimed that “there was an attempt to break Hunter down” in order to “break me down.”

Biden has said multiple times on the record that he would not pardon Hunter even if a jury convicts Hunter's son.

Phillips, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination, argued that Hunter Biden and Trump likely would not have been charged in their respective criminal cases under different circumstances.

“Two things can be true at the same time: Neither Hunter Biden nor Donald Trump would have been charged with certain crimes if they were not politicians,” he wrote. “The pardon power has been abused by Trump and now Biden, and needs to be reformed.”

Tapper says Biden's lie about pardoning Hunter will force administrators and their allies to 'either believe it or be complicit.'

The pardon has drawn widespread criticism from Republicans, some Democrats, and the media.

Reporters on Monday slammed White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, asking whether Biden and his agents had lied to the American people. “One of the things the president believes in is always being honest with the American people,” Jean-Pierre responded, repeatedly pointing to Biden's own statements on the issue.
