Dem Sen. Murphy: We Have ‘Open’ Border

On Monday’s “PBS News Hour,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), one of the Senate border and foreign policy package negotiators, said Republicans “would rather keep the border open and unregulated.” “It would be better to keep it,” he said. President Trump opposed this package in his next reelection bid.

Murphy said. “So let’s go back and understand why we’re here. Last fall, Democrats tried to pass the funding to Ukraine needed to stop Russian aggression. And Senate Republicans tried to pass the funding to Ukraine that we needed to stop Russian aggression. , said we would not support funding to Ukraine without border provisions. We also knew the president needed new powers to control the number of people crossing the border. We negotiated in good faith on border issues for four months. And we achieved an agreement that allows the president to close portions of the border if border crossings become too congested, and dramatically tightened the asylum system. It now takes six years to process an application instead of ten years. The expansion of family and employment visas will allow more people to enter the country legally. .”

He added, “But now the Republican Party seems to be getting colder. Donald Trump and his allies in the House are saying, “We don’t want to pass bipartisan border reform, we’d rather open the border.” That’s because they say they want to leave it as is.” It’s confusing because it will help President Trump’s future re-election bid.I believe it’s still there [are] There are enough honest Republicans in the Senate to pass this. And if we do that, I think that showing bipartisan support for the border – fixing the border and Ukraine – could perhaps pave the way forward in the House. ”
