Sen. Hirono Criticized by Republican Colleagues Over DEI Comments

Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii faced backlash from her Republican peers on Wednesday. This came after she suggested that critics of the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative might doubt her credibility simply because she is a minority.

The discussion centered on the DEI policies during the latter part of the Trump administration. Hirono’s comments followed a heated exchange with members of the Anti-DEI Law Group regarding the constitutionality of DEI initiatives.

“Now, I’m out of hours,” she expressed frustration over the witness contradicting her claim that the court had never deemed DEI unconstitutional. “We are indeed a very diverse group,” she insisted.

Hirono also targeted Bulgham with an assertive remark, referring to the way the confirmation hearing began: “This woman has a problem.”

In response to Hirono, Senator Eric Schmidt, the chair of the Constitutional Senate Judiciary Subcommittee, asserted, “Intellectually diverse!”

She shot back at Schmidt, saying, “If you’re questioning the views of Day, does that mean I should doubt you? I hope that’s not how you see it.”

“I’m not sure if you’re implying something,” she continued, “I really hope it’s not me.”

Hirono remains a vocal advocate during hearings, often finding herself in a minority during votes, with only a few senators, such as Collins, opposing her.

She thanked Schmidt and added, “I wish others would express similar sentiments towards people who look different from us…” before Schmidt interrupted, stating it was time to conclude the hearing.

Hirono has been vocal against the GOP and former President Trump over recent months, often posing unusual questions about Trump’s nominees during confirmation hearings. For instance, she accused then-nominee Pete Hegseth, during his Secretary of Defense hearing, of having intentions to harm legitimate protesters. Additionally, she was the sole member of the Senate’s Veterans Affairs Committee opposing the confirmation of Trump’s pick for VA Director.
