Costco Sees Surge in Gas Sales Amid Rising Prices

Demand for gas has significantly increased recently as consumers search for lower prices, leading Costco to exceed expectations in its third-quarter sales.

According to CEO Ron Vacris, many shoppers are actively seeking affordable options due to the strain on household budgets, which has resulted in more people signing up for memberships specifically at Costco’s gas stations.

“This was particularly evident in our gas business during the third quarter,” Vacris remarked. He noted that ongoing tensions in the Middle East have affected product supply and availability. “Our focus remains on being there for our members by ensuring we have inventory and offering the best prices,” he added.

Vacris highlighted that Costco achieved record sales volumes, with all four-week periods in the quarter surpassing previous sales figures. Moreover, the last five weeks were identified as the highest sales weeks in the company’s history.

High Energy Costs Pose Challenges for Fed Policymakers

Vacris praised the Costco team for successfully managing the logistics necessary to keep up with demand, which includes multiple gas deliveries to various locations each day. The ongoing conflict in Iran has led domestic gasoline prices to exceed $4 per gallon, while closures in key areas like the Strait of Hormuz have constrained global oil supplies, pushing prices beyond $100 per barrel.

Americans Rely on Credit Due to Rising Gas Prices

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline reached $4.39 recently, reflecting a sharp increase of about 38% from last year’s average of $3.17, based on the latest data from AAA.

Vacris pointed out that Costco’s lower gas prices have attracted new members and boosted overall store sales. He emphasized that the significant price sensitivity shown by consumers has encouraged many to visit Costco gas stations for the first time, which tends to increase their overall spending in the warehouses.

Costco’s CFO, Gary Millerchip, remarked that the company’s gas sales strategy could help widen its price advantage over higher-cost competitors. He acknowledged that this is a significant concern for their members.
