The former Michigan public health official and Democratic candidate for governor took part in the state’s Open U.S. Senate seat on Thursday, which could become one of the most viewed races of the 2026 midterm elections.
Abdul El Seid, 40, is the second Democrat to put his name in the run on behalf of Democrat Sen. Gary Peters, who is not seeking reelection.
Elseid, a prominent figure in the movement, who was highly critical of support for Israel during the 2024 election cycle, aims to set him apart from the other Democratic candidates in the race in order to replace State Sen. Mallory McMorrow in place of Peters.
McMorrow said he would vote against Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y.
However, Elseid prevented criticism of Schumer.
“Everyone who tells you to unilaterally oppose a potential candidate without knowing who the alternative is, is either active or unsophisticated,” Elle Seido told Politico. “So I want to know who is available and who is actively looking for leadership. I’ll make a decision from there.”

“What we need now is people who are willing to take the fight directly to Trump and Musk, but we also know how to rebuild our version of federal government that will serve more well after the massacre that Musk and Trump has left behind.
Other Democrats considering a run to replace Peters include U.S. Rep. Hailey Stevens and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.
Elle Seido was active in the “comminced movement,” an anti-Israel group Michigan’s Democratic constituent. Michigan had threatened to withhold support from then-President Joe Biden. He said that politics would support those who are the ultimate democratic choice for president’s tickets to oppose current President Donald Trump.
The Israel-Hamas war exposed a deep division within the Democrats in the last election cycle. And there are concerns that the conflict could again be created in Michigan’s messy Senate Democrat primary if the US Israeli Public Affairs Commission intervenes. A powerful pro-Israel lobby group supported Stevens financially in 2022. This forced Rep. Andy Levin, a competitive primary run against fellow Democrats, due to a change in district.
“Everyone is united around leadership that reminds Democrats that we should be a party of peace and justice. We remind other children in schools and hospitals that we should not send bombs or money to foreign troops to drop bombs.

El-Sayed ran for governor in 2018 as a progressive Democrat, including Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Dn.Y.
He finished second in the Democratic primary, losing more than 20 points to Gretchen Whitmer and defeating current Senator Sri Taneder over 12 points. Whitmer won the general election and is in the middle of his second term. She is unable to run again due to the time limit.
Elsade, a resident of Elsade Ann Arbor, served as director of Veterans Services for the Department of Health in Wayne County, home to Detroit. Prior to that, he was the city’s director of public health after declaring bankruptcy in 2013.
Elseid warned Democrats against learning “wrong lessons” from defeat.

“If you cut corners, cut the message and triangulate it into the most common denominator, you can find something that’s not entirely offensive to anyone. The problem with that is that you’re not actually saying anything,” he told Politico.
Elle Seido said he met with the Democratic Senate campaign committee on Tuesday. He told Politico that it was his “understanding” that the Senate Democrats’ campaign division would not be involved in the primary. If that happens, it deviates from how DSCC previously acted to clear the field of potential primary candidates, facilitating the major victory of the rep at the time. Elissa Slotkin. Now Sen. Slotkin, D-Mich. won the Hill Harper primary with ease and won the general election.

Elseid is also the second candidate to launch a campaign to replace Peters this week. On the Republican side, former US Rep. Mike Rodgers began his bid on Monday after losing the Senate race to Democrat Slotkin last year by 19,000 votes.
