Prominent Democratic leaders in blue states are reportedly drawing up plans to “anti-Trump” progressive policies.
Anticipating the possibility that Donald Trump will win the 2024 election, Democratic attorneys general are planning an “aggressive legal strategy to again fight Trump in court.” According to PoliticoThose plans also include hiring outside experts to explore areas of the law that could potentially put the government at odds with a second Trump administration.
“They make decisions sometimes based on politics, not on what they’re legally required to do.”
A central argument in the plan is that Democratic attorneys general would repeatedly sue the Trump administration over policies they don’t like.
Democrats are positioning themselves and their programs as vanguards of democracy and individual rights, but in reality they are trying to legally sabotage the incoming Trump administration for policies that do not advance liberal agendas on immigration, the environment, elections, and “reproductive health.”
New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin, a Democrat, said the effort was about protecting people’s rights.
“We can look at the first Trump administration and see that some of the policies they pursued had devastating effects on millions of people in our state,” he told Politico. “Even if that doesn’t come to fruition, we need to be prepared for that possibility so we’re not caught off guard and we’re prepared to defend our residents’ rights if necessary.”
As a result, Democrats are “preparing for potential legal challenges and building an infrastructure in case it becomes necessary,” he added.
Additionally, California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) boasted that Democrats have experience in this area.
“This is not the first time our office has faced a situation like this. We were in this position from 2016 to 2020, and we will be prepared to do so again if necessary,” he said.
In fact, when Trump was president from 2017 to 2021, Democratic attorneys general Over 160 A multi-state lawsuit against the Trump administration.
States expected to join the effort include New Jersey, California, New York, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, and potentially Oregon and Washington. Other states with liberal attorneys general may also join the coalition.
However, the motivation behind this plan is not what it seems.
While Democratic leaders have an interest in defending progressive policies, they are also motivated by the political gains they can make from using their positions as a weapon against President Trump.
“Attorneys general right now are often looking at the next political step,” former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler (D) told Politico. “They’re making decisions sometimes based on politics, not on what they’re legally required to do.”
