Mikie Sherrill Wins New Jersey Gubernatorial Election
On Tuesday night, Democratic candidate U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill emerged victorious against Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the race for New Jersey governor.
Sherrill clinched the election with 56.9% of the votes, while Ciattarelli secured 42.5%, as reported by the Associated Press. Interestingly, despite former President Trump’s influence in New Jersey during the 2024 election, it didn’t seem to help his fellow Republicans in the state.
Just prior to the election, Ciattarelli managed to close the gap, reducing the Democrats’ nearly double-digit lead in the polls to a narrower margin. Unfortunately for him, this marked his third unsuccessful attempt at the gubernatorial post, even after gaining momentum in the campaign’s final stretch.
Multiple bomb threats during the election morning caused confusion across several polling locations, particularly in the five counties with the highest voter registration. Despite the alarming situation, law enforcement did not find any devices, and voters ultimately continued to cast their ballots.
Following these disruptions, voting resumed safely, and New Jerseyans made their choice for a Democratic governor. Ciattarelli’s campaign did receive notable support from Trump, and also from some local Democrats. For instance, Garfield Mayor Everett Garnt switched his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican and endorsed Ciattarelli during the election.
In light of Garnt’s support, Ciattarelli addressed a crowd, stating, “Not just Republicans want change. It’s the independent voters and even moderate Democrats who see the failures of this administration.” Sherrill, on the other hand, received commendations from former President Barack Obama, who highlighted her “integrity, grit, and dedication to service.”
