Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor Race Results
Democratic state Senator Ghazala Hashmi has been announced as the victor of Virginia’s lieutenant governor race, according to various sources, including the Associated Press.
The Associated Press and Decision Desk Headquarters confirmed Hashmi’s win against John Reed, a radio host and Republican political strategist. The AP made the call at 8:28 p.m. ET. Hashmi garnered 62% of the votes, while Reed received approximately 46.6%.
This outcome is believed to be another setback for Republicans, who will also see Democratic Abigail Spanberger winning the governor’s position.
Reed, while launching his campaign, criticized what he termed “Woke Democrats,” claiming they prioritize issues that don’t align with the state’s main concerns.
“This type of reckless leadership, where everyone focuses on racial issues and creates unnecessary animosity, distracts from our leaders’ duty to address essentials: the economy, infrastructure, and public safety,” he stated. “That’s why I felt compelled to run.”
He characterized himself as a person with “very strong principles,” expressing a desire to bridge divides between Republicans and Democrats, hoping to tackle longstanding issues together.
On the other hand, Hashmi emphasized her identity as a diverse candidate amidst her opponent’s open sexuality. “I believe this reflects what voters desire. They want representatives who mirror their own experiences and concerns,” she remarked.
Hashmi also criticized Reed’s positions, stating, “He supports banning abortion, wants to cut funding from public schools, and holds extreme views that contradict the majority’s wishes here in Virginia.”
