Virginia Attorney General Candidate Faces Pressure to Withdraw

Jay Jones, a candidate for Virginia’s attorney general, is encountering increased calls to step down after revelations about an investigation related to a reckless driving conviction.

His campaign has already been under scrutiny, especially following leaked messages from 2022 where he expressed, well, disturbing sentiments towards a Republican congressman and his family.

In one instance, Jones mentioned that if faced with the choice to shoot either then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert, Adolf Hitler, or Pol Pot, he would aim for Gilbert. He went on to describe Gilbert’s children using pejorative terms, implying they were being raised with authoritarian ideals, and even wished harm upon them. Strikingly, none of his Democratic colleagues have urged him to exit the race following this incident.

“From murderous text messages to reckless driving at 116 miles per hour to fraud in court, if Jay Jones is convicted of fraud, it’s hard to see how he could serve as the state’s attorney, let alone as Virginia’s attorney general.”

Recent reports indicate that the Jones campaign is embroiled in yet another controversy—a 2022 reckless driving incident where he was caught speeding at 116 mph.

In that case, the court mandated Jones, a former Democratic state representative, to pay a fine and complete 1,000 hours of community service. Allegedly, he fulfilled half of this through volunteering with the NAACP and the other half with a group he founded called Meet Our Moment, without informing the court of his connection.

The investigation into his community service led New Kent County Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Rennick to recuse himself due to potential conflicts, suggesting instead that a special prosecutor be appointed. However, the proposed prosecutor, Nathan Green, declined the appointment, citing that it would be inappropriate to take on the case.

Meanwhile, Jones’ Republican rival, current Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, has publicly called for him to withdraw, stressing that Virginians deserve leadership with unquestionable integrity.

“It’s quite simply impossible for Jay Jones to assume the responsibilities of his office while under a public criminal probe,” Miyares stated. He further lamented that if Jones chooses to remain in the race, it demonstrates a significant lack of respect for voters.

Previously, the Republican Attorneys General Association had demanded Jones’s withdrawal following the emergence of the text messages and reiterated their stance due to the ongoing investigation.

Adam Piper, the association’s Executive Director, expressed his concern about Jones’s qualifications to hold such an important office, saying, “His actions have repeatedly demonstrated a lack of character and integrity.”

As of now, Jones’s campaign has not offered any comments regarding these ongoing pressures.
