Resolution to Remove Stacey Plaskett from House Intelligence Committee
A group of conservative lawmakers is pushing for a resolution aimed at removing Democratic nonvoting delegate Stacey Plaskett from the House Intelligence Committee. This comes after text messages exchanged between her and the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein reemerged during a congressional hearing in 2019.
Plaskett, who represents the U.S. Virgin Islands, is alleged to have collaborated with Epstein to undermine President Donald Trump’s reputation during a hearing where Michael Cohen, the president’s former lawyer, was testifying. The resolution accuses Plaskett of “colluding” with Epstein during that February 2019 session, as noted in a document shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation.
If deemed “privileged,” a censure resolution to remove Plaskett from her committee assignments could be voted on in the coming week by the House Freedom Caucus (HFC).
Critics, particularly among Republican lawmakers, have expressed disapproval of Plaskett for being sympathetic to Epstein’s victims while previously defending the convicted sex offender.
“I think she needs to be censured by the House and removed from the Intelligence Committee,” HFC Chairman Andy Harris commented to reporters.
The resurfaced text messages between Plaskett and Epstein were part of a broader document release from Epstein’s estate and highlighted by the Washington Post. The names of co-conspirators were not disclosed, but it’s clear that Plaskett communicated with Epstein during Cohen’s testimony.
Cohen claimed he paid hush money to Trump regarding an alleged extramarital affair, which Trump has vehemently denied.
The resolution suggests that Epstein had a role in helping Plaskett formulate the questions she directed at Cohen. It states that during the hearing, she received guidance from Epstein and was praised for her performance.
For instance, an exchange showed Epstein misidentifying Trump’s former aide, Rona Graff, and Plaskett responding, “Quick I’m up next is an acronym.”
In another message, Epstein urged her to consider questions about other members involved with the Trump Organization. Plaskett acknowledged her awareness and indicated she was ready for her turn.
Democratic leadership is expected to oppose this censure resolution, criticizing it as a political maneuver. Pete Aguilar remarked that they are not unfamiliar with Andy Harris’s tactics, implying that Republicans are attempting to exploit the Epstein documents after previously resisting calls for transparency.
A representative for Plaskett did not provide a comment when approached for a response.
