Sen. Mark Kelly’s Remarks on President Trump

Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) recently referred to President Donald Trump as a “disabled president” during an interview. In this discussion, he was posed a question about whether the nation would be accepting of a “disabled first lady.”

Kelly, a former astronaut married to gun control advocate Gabby Giffords, shared his thoughts on the topic, stating, “We currently have a president with a disability.” His comments unfold as he contemplates a potential presidential run in 2028.

Back in 2011, Gabby Giffords was severely wounded in a mass shooting, which almost cost her life. The incident caused significant brain damage, particularly affecting the areas responsible for language.

The attempt on her life marked the end of Giffords’ congressional career and had lasting effects. She dealt with acute damage to her language processing abilities. This situation shifted Kelly’s role significantly, creating a new path as a caregiver to Giffords, while also navigating his role as a senator and critic of Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Additionally, Giffords experiences a condition known as “dysfluent aphasia,” limiting her ability to communicate stories and events, though it doesn’t impact her intelligence.

In another recent interview, Kelly critiqued the Trump administration’s approach to Iran, describing it as “wobbly.”

He expressed, “Every military member who volunteers to join the U.S. military understands the risks involved. I flew 39 combat missions in the first Gulf War. Veterans comprehend what’s at stake. But what’s unexpected is a president who leads us into conflict without clear reasoning or plans.” He emphasized, “What I see now is a government in disarray.”

Kelly also suggested that Trump is attempting to suppress his voice to avoid confronting him about his “bullshit.”
